RICHARD SIMMONS SLIMMONS CLOSING

Good Day Monday. In the spirit of Thanksgiving I feel an over abundance of gratitude. This weekend was a very emotional weekend for me and many others. Richard Simmons Slimmons Studio held it’s last class in Beverly Hills CA. I was lucky enough to be living back in LA to attend the last class. It was such a bitter sweet moment, a reunion and a goodbye; yet for me the connections and friendships will last a lifetime. Richard Simmons himself did not teach the class, and he was missed dearly yet it still was such a beautiful moment, a gathering of people from all ages who are forever connected by Richard Simmons and his message. Love yourself, love others, such a simple yet profound message.

If you have followed my weight loss blog and journey you know in the beginning in 2013 I was in the Richard Simmons’ HairDo video, and soon after I was a regular and a member at Slimmons Studio in Beverly Hills. I met so many wonderful people through my Slimmons experience, and getting to know Richard Simmons was indeed a high point not only in my weight loss blog and journey but in my life. I made life long friends, I became part of a community where everyone is welcome. We are all on the same path, working towards better health and wellness and Richard Simmons, the Slimmons staff and members of Slimmons welcomed me and everyone with open arms. I felt like family.

In 2014 I moved to San Francisco, and it was about the same time Richard Simmons decided to take a break from public life. He stopped teaching classes at his studio. I continued to follow my friends online and I followed his Facebook page from afar. Like the rest of the world I was concerned about him. I am so grateful I was back in LA to be at the last class taught before Slimmons closes its doors for good.

A little back story about my Richard Simmons experience. Way before I ever met him, before my little appearance in his video, and before the classes, I was a dancer who did my Mother’s Sweatin’ to the Oldies tapes with my sister in our living room in Cleveland, Ohio.  I can still do all the routines. My favorite tape was Sweatin’ to the Oldies 2, it had the best music. I dreamed of appearing in one of his videos. ( little did I know that one day I would be in one of his videos).  Every time I hear the song Heatwave, or Shout I bust into a routine and skip through a grapevine, it doesn’t matter where I am or who I am with.

I am and always will be in awe of Richard Simmons and the whole Slimmons community and I am forever grateful to call myself part of it.  Richard Simmons and his community were the beginning and inspiration that got me rolling on this weight loss journey and blog. The video was in July 2013, the exact week I began my weight loss blog. I almost did not go because I was so embarrassed about my weight. Since that moment I am now at 164 lbs. I am 29 lbs away from goal.  I have learned many lessons along the way, lessons from Richard Simmons and his community.

I owe so much to Richard Simmons, Slimmons and the friends I met along the way at that little lively Studio in Beverly Hills, CA.  Saturday was a moment of memories, of tears, of people gathering around and dancing to the music. The energy could light up all of Los Angeles. Richard Simmons was not teaching, but the wonderful staff (Sherry, Michelle, and Anne) captured that same spark, that feeling that I kept coming back for. I am alive, and I love life. That is the feeling I got from Slimmons classes. It was not about the size of my thighs, or how my body image felt on that particular day. It was this sensation, you know that magical feeling when the hairs on your arm stand on end? That is what it felt like to dance within the hallowed walls of Slimmons.

It was Magical.

I am only half way there but so grateful for the journey. In my head I will always hear Richards words of wisdom:

Drink your water

Move every Day

Watch your portions

Be kind to yourself and to others.

The closing of Slimmons was a reunion, a sad yet joyful reunion. I was just grateful I had the opportunity to be here and share in the moment and memories with the people I now call life long friends. My inspirations, my mentors, my contemporaries, the loves of my life.  People of all ages, we are all connected by Richard Simmons.

I walked away with renewed willpower and inspiration. I am looking into becoming a group exercise instructor myself. It is something I have wanted to do for a long time and Marie a member of Slimmons (and an aerobics instructor) inspired me to go for it. I admit the last few weeks my will lass been at a low. I got sick, I have an injured rotator cuff but reuniting with the Slimmons family was just what I needed to keep going. I am sad it is closing but so grateful for the experience.

I will take this renewed inspiration and move forward. I will try harder, work harder, and be kinder to myself as I am out chasing my goals. I will keep in touch with the lovely souls from Slimmons I call friends, and I will attend classes of those who now teach in the style that captured the world by storm. The eye of that storm as retired yet his influence will go on forever.

Next time you take a sip of your water with lemon, remember Richard Simmons is the straw that stirs the drink. Keep Dancing. You are beautiful. We are family.

Much love and Light to all

Let’s Sweat

We love you Richard Simmons

Love, Rose

LOOKING BACK AND FORWARD

Good Morning Monday. Here is my schedule for the week. This is week 4 of the BenderFitness 12 week bikini prep workouts. I am totally sticking to it, and I feel great and motivated.

I have this app on Facebook that looks back at my memories, and at the same moment I was looking for a great and inspiring fitness quote to include in this post. My memories were two years ago when I began my weight loss blogging journey, and when I was in a Richard Simmons Video.  The quote I happened to come across is from the man himself. So today as I go forward with all of my goals, I will reflect on my beginnings two years ago when I met the man Richard Simmons, a man who really changed lives and helped people believe they can do it too. I am honored I had the opportunity to not only dance with him in his video, but to attend many of his classes before he decided to take some time off. I am always inspired by Mr. Richard Simmons as I continue on with my weight loss/fitness/philanthropic goals. I am forever grateful for the impact he has on me and so many others in the world. When he decides to teach again, I will be waiting outside Slimmons with bells on. Have a wonderful week and don’t forget to sweat!!!

What’s the secret to weight loss? People ask me this all the time. Let’s ask the weight saint himself?

Number one, like yourself. Number two, you have to eat healthy. And number three, you’ve got to squeeze your buns. That’s my formula.

GOLDEN GATE GOALS

Good Monday Morning to all. I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I had an awe-inspiring Saturday with my husband James and friends on a boat cruise in San Francisco. It really was a special moment and it truly showcased what a stunning city San Francisco is. I am blessed to have the opportunity to live in such amazing cities and I am forever grateful. I try to schedule my fun days on days I take off from working out, since it just makes sense. I love making new friends, and meeting new people.

I am so determined, even with the struggles and challenges that come my way. My husband and I have decided we are going to really live and we definitely have in the past, but from now on nothing will get in our way as long as we have our health. I am definitely much healthier and stronger than I was when I began in 2013, and I am far from done. Now it is time to lose my remaining weight, get much more fit and strong and tackle my fitness bucket list. I have also contacted a charity I am interested in, and I am planning a run over the Golden Gate Bridge to raise funds for an animal rescue locally. If I do not hear back I will contact another rescue, time is of the essence because they may be another transition in the near future. I got this though, and I am not stopping. The Golden Gate Bridge is iconic, and I can say I drove over it, walked it twice, ran it twice, and now I went under it in a boat. I am so grateful for the places I have lived, and the amazing souls I encounter and make the journey such an adventure.

Here is week two of Melissa Bender Fitness Bikini Competition workouts, a 12 week program. I am on week two, and I am tailoring the workouts for my schedule so it may look a little different here than on her site. Tomorrow is week five of my Weight Watchers Online experience and I am also loving that as well. I weigh in tomorrow. So far I have lost an additional 8 lbs since beginning Weight Watchers Online. Taking photos on special occasions is so much more fun when you feel good about yourself, no longer do I avoid the camera like I did in the beginning of 2013.

Here is my schedule for the week. Namaste’ and go get it!!

WEIGH IN TUESDAY

daytwo

Good day to all. I am on my week four of weightwatchersonline and I lost another pound, total of 8 lbs in one month. I love doing the points system, it takes the fear and guilt out of food and the ww app is a life saver for me. I have said it before, with a history of eating disorders this app helps me to regulate my food and not skip meals altogether. I actually eat more when I do weight watchers. It is amazing and I plan to continue it to my weight loss goal of  around 135 lbs. I am currently 168 lbs. I was over 210 at one point and I am just 3 lbs from what was my lowest weight before my crazy move. I got this and I look forward to becoming strong and fit to tackle my fitness bucket list. I welcome phase two of my journey.

Today is day two for month one of my Melissa Bender Workouts, I am doing the 12 week Bikini Prep workouts, tailored on my timing. I am doing them on my patio, since I hate working out indoors. I am lucky to live in California where the climate allows me to workout outside practically always. I love the breeze as I workout. I learn the exercises ahead of time by watching the video a few times. Then I have photos of the break downs, and I work along to music. I admit I am sore today, but that makes me very happy. It is the best kind of sore. I also have an old injury on my right foot so I am extra careful, and today I am wearing a brace for extra support. When I run I go at a comfortable pace for me, and I just keep going. I am all about the distance and not about speed.

I feel amazing today, and no matter what comes my way I feel like I can move forward with my goals. One day at a time.

Much love and Light

COLD BROWN RICE SALAD

I believe we are all on a journey, for me it has been a phenomenal ride and I am loving every minute of it. Life is a journey and I love life. I believe if life hands us lemons, we can make lemon cookies and share with those around us. Love, life, and food should be shared. We are on this journey together.

JOURNEY

People often talk to me about their weight problems, and I always explain it is just weight. Weight is not permanent, as soon as we gain it we can lose it. We just have to put the effort in and be consistent in our weight loss efforts. A week of strict dieting all week and eating everything in sight come Saturday would have never worked for me. For me it is slow and steady, after all I have all the time in the world. Three, six, nine months will pass. I would rather go about my goals the healthy way than look for a get skinny quick scheme.  Exercise, including my yoga and running paired with a healthy diet wins the race in the long run. Fifty pounds down, and now ready to tackle my plateau with the next phase of my journey. With that comes with some new experimentation in the kitchen. I tend to skip meals, and that just slows your weight loss efforts.

Here is my Cold Brown Rice Salad. It is perfect for any occasion. You can pack it and take it on a summer picnic. Your vegan friends can eat it. It is gluten free and oh so delicious. I paired it with baked chicken over spinach and field greens. I have learned food is not the enemy. Food nourishes our body and soul, and gives us the fuel to do the things we love to do. Here is my recipe which I derived from a dish my roommate Rachel made for me back in Cleveland, Ohio. It was just as delicious as it was then, especially since it was made just for me from a beloved friend. So now I share it with you, food was meant to be shared with love. I made this in bulk so we could have some for days, and of course I offered some to my lovely neighbor. Continuing the tradition that food must be shared.

COLD BROWN RICE SALAD

2 PACKETS SAFEWAY BROWN RICE/WILD RICE WITH QUINOA

1 CAN LOW SODIUM BLACK BEANS

1 CAN NO SALT CORN

2 ROMA TOMATOES CHOPPED FINE

1 RED ONION CHOPPED FINE

1 CUP GREEN BEANS (STEAMED AND FLASHED IN COLD WATER)

BALSAMIC DRESSING (RECIPE TO FOLLOW)

I used microwave rice, it is pure and has only three ingredients. Brown, wild rice with Quinoa. I am all about convenience but you could use 4 cups of a mixture of brown/wild rice and quinoa.

1. Follow instructions and microwave one packet at a time.

2. Add rice mixtures to a large bowl.

3. Add chopped raw onion, chopped tomatoes, 1 can corn, 1 can black beans, 1 cup green beans and mix.

4. Add half cup of balsamic dressing and chill salad. You could eat this warm or cold but I prefer cold. Over mixed greens with baked chicken was delicious and so healthy.
